REVIEW: Makeup Revolution Iconic Pro 1 Palette

by - March 30, 2015

I knew even before my Makeup Revolution order arrived that this was going to be the first item that I was going to both use and review. I'd seen reviews of this palette online and was dying to try it. Makeup Revolution boasts that this palette, along with its sister the Iconic Pro 2, contains their new Super-Elite eyeshadow formulation. Colour me intrigued! Let's not beat around the bush, these 2 Iconic Pro palettes are pretty much exact dupes - at least as far as the shades appear in the pan - of the Lorac Pro palettes and I have to admit that I'd always wanted to pick up the original Lorac Pro but only got around to deciding to get it when Lorac exited Sephora and the palette became exponentially more difficult to get my hands on in Canada. So of course, I can only review these palettes for what they are, not what they are trying to be. Get what I'm saying? Great!

Let's take a closer look at this baby!

Unlike previous Makeup Revolution palettes, the outer packaging of this palette has a matte finish - no doubt mimicking the Lorac Pro and a lot of other high end makeup that has gone matte on the outside. As we all know, matte packaging looks amazing but tends to collect finger prints like it's going out of style. I actually find that this one isn't too bad for that, as long as my fingers aren't overly moist. This packaging is really sleek and simple with gold text on the front and a sticker on the back telling you which Iconic Pro it is. I would have liked if the front actually specified 1 or 2, since both of these palettes look identical on the outside, but I'm not finding that much of an issue. The lid closes securely, which is nice, and it feels surprisingly sturdy and substantial.

Included in this palette is a large mirror and a double ended brush as well as a plastic film that details the names of each of the shades. Some people don't like the plastic film, but I find that I can leave it pressed against the mirror so that I can have an easy reference to the shade names and it stays there pretty well. If these films tend to move around, I find that a little bit of glue or an adhesive dot keeps it perfectly in place. Admittedly, I don't tend to use the mirrors in my palettes, but if I did I'd be very happy with this one.

The brush is dual ended, as I said, with a narrow flat shader on one end and a small domed crease brush on the other. These aren't my favorite brushes and wouldn't be my first choice, but I definitely think they're a step above the sponge tip applicators that are usually included with palettes. I find the shader end would be more suited for concealer, but it is workable for placing colour on the lid. The domed crease brush is definitely pretty good, if you ask me. It's the perfect size for placing colour in the crease, but fluffy enough that it doesn't pack too much colour on the first swipe. Overall, the brush is sort of a throwaway for me, since I have a huge brush collection, but I'm not mad at it.

I love the shade selection in this palette, which I suppose is credited more to Lorac than Makeup Revolution. The matte shades were really impressive for me. They're smooth and silky in texture and apply easily without any patchiness or skipping across the lid and blend really beautifully together for a seamless look. This selection of matte shades is perfect for every day, whether you're looking for something simple and contoured or something a little smokier. The shimmer shades are also really beautiful, which is less surprising but still a major plus. They have a smooth, buttery texture and apply with really great pigmentation. In the shimmer shades there is also a really good shade selection that makes for endless inspiration for looks. Wear time on these shadows is really good and after wearing them for a full day I didn't experience any creasing and only very minimal fading.

My favorite shades in this palette are definitely Fade, Drama, Too Grey, and Stage, since those are right in my wheel house. Fade is a perfect shade for me for deepening up the crease and making shades blend seamlessly.

Overall, I think this is a really great palette that will get a lot of use in my collection. Like I said, I can't compare it to the Lorac Pro palette, but standing on its own I think this is a great palette and a really great value for what you're getting. The quality, texture, and pigmentation on the shadows absolutely does not disappoint.
